Pocket Bike racing is also known as Minimoto or mini GP racing. It is where pocket bikes are raced around tracks designed for kart racing. The sport is gaining popularity around parts of the world but dominates in Japan and in Europe.

The pocket bikes are about a quarter of the size of a regular motorcycle and are powered by a two-stroke internal combustion engine. It runs on somewhere between 39cc to about 50cc and can produces about 15 horsepower. Because of its miniature size, the bikes have no suspension built in and rely completely on the tires to absorb bumps and handle cornering. The entry-level models produce as little as 2.4 to 4.2 horsepower and the higher end, more expensive models can produce as much as 11 to 17 horsepower. Weighing at around 40 pounds, the power to weight ratio is nicely favorable for racing. They are raced on kart tracks up to 78 mph in organized racing leagues.

Due to their small size, the bikes are conceivably easier to transport and are relatively affordable in the powered racing sport. For a basic model manufactured in China, they are priced from $200 and up. For a top Italian model they can run up to $7,000. The low cost of the pocket bikes makes it easy for children to learn about motorcycle racing without the high costs and risks associated with full-sized motorcycle racing.

  • This is a list of mods you can do to your pocket bike if you’re on a budget, or you are new to the sport and looking to give your pocket bike that first extra kick.

Probably the most effective per dollar upgrade you can get is a timing key. For about $20, a timing key can increase your pocket bikes engines timing by 10 degrees. Be aware that this will increase performance on some engines, but can also decrease performance in others depending on what the factory set timing is.

Replace your stock metal reed with a high performance Fiberglass one. Fiberglass reeds allow more and faster fuel into the carb, this resulting in a faster burning of fuel, which increases low, mid and top end power. A fiberglass reed will cost about $20-$30.

If your bike came with a black air cleaner instead of an air filter, its loosing potential power, by adding a high performance air filter and vstack, your allowing more and faster air into your engine, which will increase performance and engine life. Typically $30-$40.

One of the most important things that should be considered when buying modifications is your fuel filter. A Hi Flow Fuel Filter will run you about $7 to $15 and protects your engine from harm by dirt, plastic, and other debris. It is a must for every bike. Check your fuel line if it comes with a fuel filter, if not get one, otherwise dirt and other foreign objects will get inside your fuel and block your carb.

A good set of HP clutch springs will make your acceleration a lot better over stock and coming out of corners etc, you will have a lot more power for only $15 to $25. All CAGS come with 3 shoe clutches, the major let down with these clutches are the springs.

If you have general engine knowledge or instructions, these mods make for a very good starting point to modifying your pocket bike. When installing these mods, the flywheel, clutch, and carb must be removed first. If you have any doubts about whether you know what you’re doing, you could visit a pocket bike repair shop and they would gladly do the install for a small fare.
